I LOVE fresh tomatoes though...wish I could have been there to help you eat your Ma's. My favorite is to slice them on to toasted bread with a light layer of mayo, salt and pepper...most of the sandwich should be tomato, not bread. Yum. My mom and dad's tomatoes still have a few weeks to go so you have filled me with anticipation! If you ever go victory garden on me, with the growing and making and canning and what not, you would have the perfect Christmas present for me, pretty much forever. :)
BrookeBrookehttp://4clubbs.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8588966707832739660.post-23083027509025186982008-07-06T18:43:16.000-07:002008-07-06T18:43:16.000-07:00It is not a good growing season for tomatoes out w...It is not a good growing season for tomatoes out west! I do admit that I use canned tomatoes. But to actually crack open a jar of Prego or Ragu, that's considered a mortal sin in my family. Besides, I can taste the corn syrup! :)

I hope all is well with the pregnancy and such!C Laznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8588966707832739660.post-30678770562840155952008-07-11T02:50:12.000-07:002008-07-11T02:50:12.000-07:00Gina - glad you make the marinara from scratch. I think most people use canned tomatoes too.

One thought though - if you canned those tomatoes in Ball jars and kept them all winter/year - wouldn't you still be making marinara from scratch, but you just took a six month (or so) break in the prep??dadcooksnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8588966707832739660.post-82656638019924869892008-07-11T05:13:03.000-07:002008-07-11T05:13:03.000-07:00Hee hee. I won't even buy bread that has it in it (and that's HARD to find), but I actually buy Ragu because it doesn't use it. I like the simplicity of that sauce (taste and ingredients-wise).

And "dad," I think you are certainly right. I want to get to canning stuff next year. The tomatoes won't happen this year, because I'm just not bendy or heat-tolerant enough to garden right now... I'm keeping busy re-doing the inside of the house, and growing a human this year. :) But next year, I'm gonna start a garden and get me a slew of fresh tomats!

Gwhatsfordinnerginahttp://www.whatsfordinner.usnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8588966707832739660.post-42001648180363633792008-07-23T00:17:35.000-07:002008-07-23T00:17:35.000-07:00Gina, Ilost you somewhere - best of luck on your g...Gina, Ilost you somewhere - best of luck on your great arrival coming.
